World’s Largest Mall in China, 99% Vacant
The New South China Mall is the world’s largest. Unlike “dead malls” which are characterized by merchants abandoning them, The New South China Mall has failed to attract merchants since its opening in 2005. As some of the YouTube commenters have pointed out, someone’s gotta film a Chinese zombie movie there.
There’s something eerily depressing about this vapid modern wasteland. Somehow one grows up associating clean lines, kitsch and technology with bustling city life, and to see it stand empty like this… dunno, makes me realize J.G. Ballard truly was a visionary.
